When you found the dream IT job you want to apply for, you want to show you have the skills for the IT job. You can be creative in showing your skills on your resume. Remember that mostly the skills wanted in a job advertisement is a wish-list and you don’t have to check all the boxes. As a newcomer in the IT world you want to make the best impression.
Lets start with skills you have gained from previous jobs. If its regarding specific techniques or skill you can explain how and in what project you have use that technique or skill. If you don’t have the experience yet, you can very easily take a course and put the course on you’re resume. For example you could show hospitality skills because you have worked in a restaurant. For IT jobs where service skills are required this can be very beneficial.
When displaying your skills, try to be brief in the resume. Explain when, what(the project) and who(your role). Read the IT job advertisement carefully and leave unnecessary skills for the IT job out of you’re resume. Stick to the skills which where asked, add only additions if it can be related to the job.
How to build your resume?
1. Contact information
Don’t forget to put your contact information on your resume. Make sure your name, e-mail and phone number has been added.
In this section you fill in your education. Your education level. Where did you go to school and in which period you followed the education.
In this section you can describe your career path. Put your latest job at the top. Fill in at which company you worked for. During which period. Briefly describe your role. Here you have the change to emphasize your skills towards the job you are applying for. If the job requires a skill which you have and can prove from previous job, emphasize this in the brief description. Try to cut back on information about less relevant jobs.
4. Programming languages
Optional section only relevant if you know any programming languages. If you are developer you can use this section to show which languages and technologies you know and to what level.
Optional section where you can proof you like to learn. Even if you don’t have experience yet about a topic, here you can show you are interested in it and already acquired some knowledge about the subject.
Optional section where you can show your knowledge of different languages and your proficiency in them. To decide if you want to use this section, you can have look at the requirements of languages in the job advertisement. The possibility is great you are an expat, in that regard it can be import. It would be good to find out in which language the company is communicating.
Optional but recommendable. Here you can show what kind of person you are by sharing voluntary work or what kinds of sports you like. Maybe you play an instrument. Sometimes this can create a connection with the reader. Also you can show why you should be working in IT in this section. For example because in your spare time you’ve like building website or helping friends and family solve technical problems.
8. Keep it brief
Although some people believe a resume can not be longer than one page, I would not go that far. A one page resume is only a guideline. If you have to leave essential information out then you’re resume will not be successful. Your resume should not be much longer than one page though.
9. Resume scanning by recruiters
To emphasize step 8, recruiters will scan you’re resume very fast. First they will have a look at your education. If that’s good they will look at you’re experience. Because these recruiters see many resumes you’re resume has to be build in a way it is easy to spot you’re qualities.
Unless you are a designer in most cases companies will not hire you because of the styling of you’re resume. My advise would be function before styling.
